Commissioner Tim Bubb Judging at the 2009 Hartford Fair

The 151st Hartford Independent Fair was a record setter in terms of attendance. Officials say, some 42,724 fairgoers passed through the gates on August 12 breaking the Wednesday attendance total of 37,244 by a whopping 5,480. The arrival of basically dry hot summer weather seems to have helped, along with a strong list of grandstand events.

A Hartford Fair tradition was the annual Sweet Treats to Eat Contest in the 4-H Center. Licking County Commissioner Tim Bubb, joined by Commissioner's Doug Smith and Brad Feightner, were the judges. In what must be considered 'tough duty' they spend some two hours judging pee-wee, youth and adult entrants in the pie, cake, cookie, candy and miscellaneous categories.

Above is a photo of (l-r) Commissioners Smith, Bubb and Feightner. They are pictured with Cheryl Lohrman who brought several successful entries to the competition, including the Best of Show award.

Lorman's black raspberry pie won the top prize from among 46 entries. Lohrman shared with the audience a bit of her Fair tradition, remembering fondly as a youth helping make chicken sandwiches in the Chatham Methodist Church booth. Holding the Best of Show gold plate, she also remembered, with a few tears, learning to bake at her grandmother's knee and watching her meticulously edge her pie crusts. She added, "Grandma always made wonderful deserts. She baked because of the love of it and that's how I bake - with love."

During Fair week, from August 9th through 15th, Commissioner Bubb and his fellow Commissioner's were on the fairgrounds greeting visitors both on the Midday and under the Grandstand, in the County Government area. In addition, the Commissioners also judged the annual 'wild turkey calling" competition for youth, and the annual 'wild game cookoff' for both youth and adults. These events were held in the Natural Resources area, a new area of the Fairgrounds that is growing in popularity.

A special congratulations to Johnstown's Caitlyn Dever who reigned over the Fair as Queen. The 18-year old was sponsored by Johnstown-Monroe High School FFA. Drew Neilley, age 19, of Baltimore was crowned Fair King, and joined Dever in a variety of activities during the week.

Commissioner Update - May 1, 2009

Licking County Update

From…County Commissioner Tim Bubb

Primary Election this coming Tuesday…

On Tuesday, May 5th Licking County’s polling places will be open and well staffed, from 6:30am till 7:30pm. You can vote on the ‘touch screen’ machines, which is easy, or use a paper ballot. There are a number of important local issues including school levies. The Licking County Board of Elections works hard to insure a fair and well run election, and I would remind all registered voters to go to the polls on Tuesday – if you have not already voted early in person or by mail. If you have election related questions please call the Board of Elections at 740-670-5080 or visit their information on the Licking County Government Website – lcounty.com .

County Government Notes…

In a continuing effort to encourage animal adoptions, the Licking County Animal Care and Control will sponsor “Pet Adoption 2009” THIS WEEKEND!

The event will be held at the Licking County Animal Shelter in Heath (corner of State Route 13 and Hopewell Drive). The goal is to save the lives of and find great homes for dozens of ‘homeless animals’.

The public is invited to stop by the Shelter either this Saturday, May 2nd or this Sunday, May 3rd, between 12-Noon and 4:00 pm. The public can tour the shelter, and talk to the friendly staff and volunteers about pet adoption.

This national ‘Pet Adoption 2009’ event will join Licking County with hundreds of shelters around the country, and the common purpose is the adoption of dozens of healthy and friendly dogs and cats.

According to Office Manager John Silva, of Licking County Animal Care and Control, the facility is a popular place for the public to come and find their new best friend and for those happy reunions when people locate their lost pets.

Animal Control Director Jon Luzio adds, Licking County has a combined adoption and redemption rate of 77-percent, which puts it among the best County Shelters in the State of Ohio. This also means the Shelter’s humane euthanasia rate is only 15-percent, which is only one-third of the animals euthanized at many other Ohio shelters. For information visit Animal Control on the Licking County official web site … www.lcounty.com/ac/lcaso.

On a personal note – I am pleased to report that Licking County Commissioner Doug Smith announced last evening his intent to stand for re-election in 2010. I believe I speak for fellow Commissioner Bred Feightner, in saying we are delighted that Commissioner Smith is seeking a second term.
Frankly, public servants and men of his quality don’t come along often, and Licking County will continue to benefit from his wisdom and guidance, when re-elected!

The historic West Courtroom of the Licking County Courthouse was the site for the official swearing-in of elected county public officials on Tuesday, December 30th. Some 200 friends, family and interested citizens attended the public event. It was the final event in the County’s Bicentennial Year of 2008.

The following elected public officials received their oaths of office. Judge Robert Hoover was sworn-in again as Juvenile-Probate Judge by Judge Jon Spahr, Richard Wright was sworn to his first term as Domestic Relations Judge by Judge Jon Spahr, Engineer Tim Lollo was sworn to a sixth term by Judge Jon Spahr, Clerk of Courts Gary Walters was sworn to office by Judge Craig Baldwin, Commissioner Tim Bubb was sworn to a second term by Judge Robert Hoover, Treasurer Mike Smith was sworn to office by Judge Craig Baldwin, Prosecutor Ken Oswalt received his oath from Judge Jon Spahr, Commissioner Brad Feightner was sworn to office by Judge Craig Baldwin, and Sheriff Randy Thorp was sworn by Judge Jon Spahr. Sheriff Thorp then swore-in several dozen of his deputies who were on hand for the event.

The event included an impressive presentation of colors by the Honor Guard of the Licking County Sheriff’s Office, and an invocation and benediction by Reverend Wes Humble of the Newark Church of the Nazarene. Humble serves as the Sheriff’s Patrol Chaplain.

Judge Jon Spahr welcomed the standing room only crowd to his historic West Courtroom, in the Licking County Courthouse, describing it as one of the most beautiful in Ohio and possibly the nation. Spahr also said he was humbled to be part of the contingent of Licking County Officials, and proud to be a resident of Licking County.

County Commissioner Tim Bubb, who organized the joint Swearing-in event with Sheriff Randy Thorp, said he was also pleased to be part of the County Government team and that most of those recently elected were able to take part in the event. The exceptions were Judge Thomas Marcelain who was ill and unable to attend, Coroner Robert Raker who was out of town for the wedding of his son, and Recorder Bryan Long who was sworn in two weeks ago in ceremonies at his office.
