Licking County Update
From…County Commissioner Tim Bubb
Primary Election this coming Tuesday…
On Tuesday, May 5th Licking County’s polling places will be open and well staffed, from 6:30am till 7:30pm. You can vote on the ‘touch screen’ machines, which is easy, or use a paper ballot. There are a number of important local issues including school levies. The Licking County Board of Elections works hard to insure a fair and well run election, and I would remind all registered voters to go to the polls on Tuesday – if you have not already voted early in person or by mail. If you have election related questions please call the Board of Elections at 740-670-5080 or visit their information on the Licking County Government Website – lcounty.com .
County Government Notes…
In a continuing effort to encourage animal adoptions, the Licking County Animal Care and Control will sponsor “Pet Adoption 2009” THIS WEEKEND!
The event will be held at the Licking County Animal Shelter in Heath (corner of State Route 13 and Hopewell Drive). The goal is to save the lives of and find great homes for dozens of ‘homeless animals’.
The public is invited to stop by the Shelter either this Saturday, May 2nd or this Sunday, May 3rd, between 12-Noon and 4:00 pm. The public can tour the shelter, and talk to the friendly staff and volunteers about pet adoption.
This national ‘Pet Adoption 2009’ event will join Licking County with hundreds of shelters around the country, and the common purpose is the adoption of dozens of healthy and friendly dogs and cats.
According to Office Manager John Silva, of Licking County Animal Care and Control, the facility is a popular place for the public to come and find their new best friend and for those happy reunions when people locate their lost pets.
Animal Control Director Jon Luzio adds, Licking County has a combined adoption and redemption rate of 77-percent, which puts it among the best County Shelters in the State of Ohio. This also means the Shelter’s humane euthanasia rate is only 15-percent, which is only one-third of the animals euthanized at many other Ohio shelters. For information visit Animal Control on the Licking County official web site … www.lcounty.com/ac/lcaso.
Spring Clean-Up…the Licking County Recycling and Litter Prevention Program is sponsoring a Tire Recycling and Appliance Recycling event this month.
The Event will be held Saturday, May 16th at the Licking County Highway Garage at 775 East Main Street in Newark.
The specifics…
Regarding tires… the disposal fee is $2 per passenger tire, $2 for light truck tires, $5 for semi-truck tires and $10 for tractor/farm equipment tires.
*Note – this is for Licking County residents ONLY - tires from commercial operations WILL NOT be accepted – limit of 10 tires and CASH ONLY. There is an additional $1 charge if the tire is on the rim.
Regarding appliances… there is a $5 charge per freon appliance and $3 per non-freon appliance. The Event is accepting washers, dryers, stoves, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, toaster ovens, toasters and window air conditioners.
*Note – refrigerators and freezers must have doors removed. Limit 3 appliances per household – CASH ONLY!
For information call the County Recycling Office at 740-670-5125. Funding for the local recycling program comes from the four-county CFLP Solid Waste District.
On a personal note – I am pleased to report that Licking County Commissioner Doug Smith announced last evening his intent to stand for re-election in 2010. I believe I speak for fellow Commissioner Bred Feightner, in saying we are delighted that Commissioner Smith is seeking a second term.
Frankly, public servants and men of his quality don’t come along often, and Licking County will continue to benefit from his wisdom and guidance, when re-elected!
