County Commissioner’s action results in 5 million dollar savings to Buckeye Lake Sewer District Customers

The Licking County Commissioners have gained approval of an Ohio EPA discounted financing rate for the major improvements to the Buckeye Lake Regional Sewage Treatment plant. The recent release of the 2008 Water Pollution Control Loan Fund (WPCLF) confirmed the favorable rate, which will result in lesser sewer utility rate increases in future years.

Commissioners Tim Bubb, Doug Smith and Mark Van Buren say the Buckeye Lake Wastewater Treatment Expansion has qualified for a one-percent loan through the Ohio EPA’s Department of Environmental Financial Assistance (DEFA). They add the financing was justified based on the demographics and income levels in the Buckeye Lake region. The favorable rate will save customers some $5-million over the 20-year loan repayment.

The Commissioners credit the support of concerned residents in the region, the Buckeye Lake Civic Association, and the Harbor Hills Homeowners Association for their steadfast support of the successful loan application for the discounted financing. The Buckeye Lake Regional Sewer plant serves over four thousand customers in Licking, Fairfield and Perry Counties; and solved the major pollution problems that fouled Buckeye Lake and its tributaries for decades prior to the mid 80’s.

Construction of the major $10-million mandated upgrade of the sewer plant began in April 2006, and the project will finish on time this April (2008) and on budget. Officials with Licking County Water and Waste Water say the plant, which was fully rebuilt and modernized, is 95-percent complete and the new systems are on line and functioning well.
